There are many ways in which you can help to further the work of our churches - roughly these divide into giving your time, and giving of money.
Joining work parties, general maintenance, support at fetes/fund raising events or even, just attending church all help contribute to the wellbeing of our churches . Volunteering, and the networking which goes with it, is a great way to make new friends and to feel useful to your own community.
Interested in fundraising?
As you will have seen from this website and what you already know or may have heard about the churches, they are beautiful buildings which have stood for centuries. However this does not come without its problems. Churches need to be maintained and unfortunately, this needs to be funded by the parish and not from central funds. There are some grants available to us but they only cover a very small portion of the cost.
For example we have recently spent £23,000 on work to Old Church. This involved the replacement of the heating system (including associated electrical works, decoration etc) as well as the refurbishment of the Lych Gates. So far, we have only been able to secure grants for £4,700 but the grant application process is ongoing. Hopefully more funds will be received in response to the various applications made.
We organise a number of fund raising events and some have become village institutions in their own right e.g. Penallt Church Fete. and Bingo at the Trellech Lion!
Our very successful Promise Auction raised over £3,300 (of which we donated 50% split between the Busy Bodies play group in Trellech and The Narth Village Hall.)
The important thing - can you please attend these events to help support the good cause.
Interested in gardening?
The churchyards need to be maintained to make sure they are kept to a standard that we can all be proud of. For St Nicholas we are fortunate that there is a separate charity (The Friends of Trellech Church and Churchyard) who maintain the churchyard for us (extra hands are always needed by them). Sadly, this is not the case at Old Church and we must engage with private contractors to maintain the grounds.
We arrange working parties for Old Church and Friends of Trellech arrange their own work parties. If you would like to take part in the next one at either St Nicholas or Old Church then please contact us and we will ensure that we let you know when the next one is taking place.
No heavy manual labour is involved and a typical working party will last approximately two hours. Besides making a huge contribution to our churches, it is also a great way to help build a community spirit by meeting your fellow villagers.
Interested in church cleaning or flower arranging (or willing to learn?)
It is also often taken for granted that the churches will be clean and there will be beautiful flower arrangements. Behind the scenes though, there are volunteers who do this as a contribution to these wonderful places. Can you help? Please contact us for St Nicholas or Please contact us for Old Church
Can you be a welcoming face for a service?
Before every service the churches must be ‘set-up’ and everything cleared away after the service. It probably takes no more than 30 – 45 minutes but it does need to be done. Similarly there is always someone to read the lessons and psalms. In addition, there are always one or two people who will greet you when you arrive at the church. We are always looking for volunteers to help us with these duties. Can you help once or twice a month. If so, please contact us
Giving of funds
There are many ways to donate money to the parish as a whole or to one of the individual churches.
The ‘old fashioned’ way by putting money on the collection plates during the service (so please attend when you can). It is also more efficient if you are a taxpayer to put the donation in a Gift Aid envelope. New rules introduced allow the entire collection to be Gift Aided without envelopes but only if there are more than 10 people in the congregation. (Also no donation more than £20 will be covered so please be aware )
By direct debit on a regular basis. It is one of the easiest ways and, again, if you are a tax payer then providing we have a signed declaration then we can reclaim the tax.
A further form of regular giving is through the Church in Wales. This is probably the easiest way for us as they deal with the tax elements and let us have the tax rebates on a monthly basis. The Gift Aid from can be downloaded by clicking on this link - Church in Wales Gift Aid
One form often overlooked is that of Legacy giving. Many of us will take it for granted that we will get baptised in church, married in church and then have our funeral services in church. Does it cross our minds to leave a Legacy in our wills towards our churches that have played a role in the most significant milestones in our lives. For further information please click on this link - www.churchlegacy.org.uk
For more information on any of the above please contact our Treasurer
The bottom line is that Old Church Penallt and St Nicholas Church Trellech are there for all of us. Will you help us to keep them in good order please?
