St Nicholas Church Bell Ringers Report for year 2018/19

At the bell ringers AGM in

February 2018, Ed Rogers stood down as Tower Captain and Peter Mossman took over. Colin Harris continues as Ringing Master expertly guiding us forward to improve our ringing skills. We had 10 ringers at the beginning of the year but unfortunately due to ill health Ed and Steve have had to stop ringing until they are fully recovered.

Fortunately two new ringers started to learn in November, Sarah and David, and they are now beginning to fill the gap so we can usually muster six ringers for a Sunday morning service. Nigel Morris is Steeple Keeper and looks after the bells to ensure they are kept in good ringing order along with the bi-annual professional inspection of the bells.Last year we had one wedding and we rang a memorial for Peter Powis, a former ringer who passed away last year.

We also had a day out in August when a team from Trellech rang at 5 different towers in Somerset. In October we took over Trellech Teas at the Babbington Centre and raised £188 towards

the Bell maintenance fund. This year we have a wedding and a renewal of vows to ring

for and believe we have a strong core of ringers so as to support the Church when called upon.

“Message in a Bottle”

image

This isn’t just the title of a 70s song by Sting but is the name of a scheme to save lives. Now it’s been taken up by Monmouth Lions Club. “Message in a Bottle” does exactly what it says on the tin - or in this case on the bottle. Anyone who needs medication, or who suffers from allergies, lists them on a special form along with their personal details.

They then put the form in the bottle and place it in the fridge. A green cross sticker on the fridge door lets the emergency services know it's there. Vital if someone is taken ill or is found unconscious. Such information could, and has already helped save lives. If anyone would like one of these bottles - free of charge - they can contact Sue Wooldridge of Monmouth Lions on 01600 740189
